Milano is a great starting point for visiting lots of places in Italy and around Europe. There are direct flights (and low-cost flights) to lots of the main European capitals and big tourist destinations. In addition to the main airlines, students should check out low-cost air companies like EasyJet and Ryanair, that have lots of cheap options.
If you’re more into slower-paced travel, the train system in and around Milano is excellent with pretty competitive prices. You can get to other parts of northern and central Italy and even parts of Switzerland and France in just a few hours by train! Nearby tourist areas and cities include Turin, Bergamo, the Alps (with great skiing spots), the Region of Liguria with lots of beaches, Genoa and Venice. You can also head up to Switzerland and visit Lugano or go to the Côte d’Azur in France. Other excellent destinations include the beautiful lakes near Milano: Lago di Como, Lago di Garda and Lago Maggiore.
So, when you have a free weekend, take a train, get out of the city and explore a new place – you won’t regret it!
