The “codice fiscale” is an alphanumeric code of 16 characters issued for free by the Revenue Agency to identify Italian citizens and foreign residents.
You need to have your own “codice fiscale” to:
– open a bank account
– sign any type of contract (rental, phone line…)
– register at the National Healthcare Service (SSN)
Starting from 2014, international students can avoid requesting the “codice fiscale” personally at the local Revenue Agency. Thanks to a special agreement with the Revenue Agency to simplify the issue of tax codes, Milan universities can manage their own procedure application for their foreign students and deliver it to them.
If you need to apply for a tax code for any reason, check out the Agenzie delle Entrate website.
